The Captain Steve's Annual Rock Fish Surf Fishing Tournament began today as the first day kicked off with a bang. Anglers were tossing their baits in around 6:00 AM to get a jump on the action. Shortly after the sun rose rods could be seen up and down the span of beach adjacent to the parking lots. There were probably 100 lines in the pool. The real action however didn't occur until about 10:30 AM when Rick V's pole bent in half. After a 15 minute fight with a fish that made several major runs for deep water, and with the help of the "Over the Dune Gang" Rick landed a 39 1/2 lb, 43" Rock Fish. Rick caught the fish on a 3 way bottom rig with a 7/0 hook and a chunk of bunker. Congratulations on a nice catch. Pat Devlin had a 26 inch rockfish that just missed the keeper mark. One lady had a short red drum caught in the wash. Shortly after her red drum Buck J. %E2%80%9CSandflea%E2%80%9D hooked up a 34 inch 13.5 pound rockfish which is currently taking second. Everyone is having a great time and enjoyed their day on the beach. Anglers did get a lot of sun today, the undertow was strong forcing many to go to sputnik sinkers and 5-8 ounce pyramids. We even had a few kingfish that how nice it was today. Dogfish kept others from being skunked better luck to everyone tomorrow.

For anglers who are anticipating using the ORV Zone beach area, park officials have stated that conditions will be evaluated again tomorrow at high tide to determine if the area can be opened.

Buck "SANDFLEA" J. a surf expert is currently in second
