fishing reports

We have had anotehr good weekend here at the shop.  There was a good crowd for the chili/chowder cookoff which was a success.  The winds did slow down the fishing a bit this weekend, only a few of the bluefish were caught along with some kingfish and dogfish too.  Sputnik sinkers worked best this weekend with the extra current produced by the full moon and the winds.  We have been getting in fresh bait.  While some people are thinking the season is winding down.  This is the time where the Fall season starts for the Striped Bass.  We have a huge selection of rods and reels along with artificial lures and trolling baits for the Striper migration.  Swing on in and let our family outfit you for your best chance at hooking up.  In the bay there are still flounder around and we have seen some blowfish(pufferfish) also caught.

Our annual Surf Fishing Striped Bass Tournament is slated for November 18-20th.  We are working for the tournament shirt design at the moment.  Mark your calandars, this is a free tournament with nice prizes given away.  It is always a great time this time of year with plenty of good memories being made.

Biggest blue for Tim and Harry they caught about 50 blues in 2 days.  About 2 strikes for each hookup.    Plus 16 inch flounder and 4 dogfish.  Not much fishing going, too much time spent catching. This is me, TIM Berlett, Lovettsville ,VA, and Harry Smith Herndon VA.  Remember hold the rod, these small guys don't usually hook themselves.

The last couple days we haven't seen as many people fishing but the bluefish have been doing well off the surf.  With a few speckled trout also in the mix.  Gene Brite, Joe. Barranco, and (Jimmy) fished the Chesapeake yesterday catching rockfish and 1 speckled trout on a fun day on the water with Capt. Walt.  We brought back 3 keeper stripers so that mean more fresh fish for another Capt. Steve's Dinner.  Around the bay we have had a few more stripers showing up, night fishing has been more productive especially with the full moon.  We are looking forward to another good weekend here on the island.  It is the 12th annual Chili & Chowder Cook-off will take place Saturday, Oct. 15.  That all for now.  Tight Lines!

Chincoteague has seen a busy holiday weekend with the Oyster Festival and the Summerlike weather.  In the surf the blues are still around in numbers hold your rod for increase catch rate.  We have also seen a few short stripers being caught off the surf as the water temperatures continue to get cooler the striper fishery will be getting better.  There has been a few keeper flounder caught off the surf, in the Fall is when we catch the most flounder surf fishing as they are heading out to deeper water.  Backbay fishing flounder are beaing caught along with bluefish and some striped bass which have been hitting mostly nights.  Come on in for the largest selection of soft plastics swimshads and plenty of hard body models too. We have in fresh mullet and bunker!

We have in fresh cobb mullet and fresh bunker!  Catches of snapper blues continue to do well in surf action.  Pink/Red surfballs seem to be the best colors for them.  The mullet rigs have also been producing some bigger blues.  In the back bay we have seen some more flounder being caught in the Assateaugue Channel.  Our store has also had another revamp with organizer Jerzey Rich putting some time in straightening everything up.  Crabbing is still going well in the backbays with the crabs getting fatter getting ready for this cooler weather.  There was a 24 inch short striper caught yesterday on a mod. ff off the surf.  The Oyster Festival is slated for Oct. 8th so people are showuing up ready for the festivities.  We hope everyone has a fun and safe holiday weekend.

We have in fresh bait, live minnows, bloodworms etc.  The last few days around here we have been catching some bluefish and kingfish off the surf.  Last night I got a chance to fish with Joe B. from Delaware and we ended up with about a dozen blues and a kingfish.  Make sure to hold your rod while you are out there for a better chance of hooking up with the blues.  For bigger fish you can deadstick your baits but make sure your drag is not set too tight.  In the backbays there are still a few flounder around, striped bass are hitting at night.  Offshore wrecks are producing some nice size seabass.  Capt. Walt with Capt. Walt's light Tackle Charters has been doing well on the bayside with speckle trout and stripers.  With the cooler weather coming in we will see more striped bass arriving.  I'll have some pictures to post and it looks to be a beautiful weekend for the upcoming Chincoteague Oyster Festival.
