fishing reports

In the wake of Captain Steve's 9th Annual RockFish Surf Fishing Tournament in which 260 anglers participated, the Assateague beach and ORV Zone was nearly empty this morning. Several anglers, did however manage to get out to the surf again today. Someone must have forgotten to tell the Over the Dune Gang and Rick A that it was only a three day tournament. They were seen out there tossing bunker into the surf in the pouring rain. No fish were landed. Oh well.

Congratulations again to the tournament winners Rick Volz, Ted Bassetti and Pat Marallo who brought in a 40 lb rock, a 30 lb rock and a 27 lb rock respectively. The winners were awarded Captain Steve's fishing merchandise that totalled over %24500 retail value.

Day three of Captain Steve's Annual Rock Fish Surf Fishing Tournament ended in torrential rain. Some hard core anglers like the Over the Dune Gang, Rick Ashman and Ed and Bonnie were late hour hold outs looking for the big one. Conditions like rain, wind from the east, rough water and high tide seemed a perfect combination for the rocks. Unfortunately no rockfish were registered but several fish were caught. Chuck caught and released a 22 inch rock while Rick V caught and kept and 18 inch red drum Also caught and released today were two star gazers. We saw a great turnout for the tournament this year thanks to all those who particiapated we really appreciate it.

Also updated there is a money tournament that runs until Dec. 10th at 5:00pm the cost is %2420 to enter. The heaviest 3 fish will place, any angler can place more than once. Sign up at Capt. Steves

Day two of Captain Steve's Annual Rock Fish Surf Fishing Tournament proved to be even more exciting than day one with more rock fish landed. The morning began with anglers again spread across the beach adjacent to the parking area. At 9:30 AM Ranger Clay gave the OK and the ORV Zone was opened for business, alleviating some angler crowding and making the south end of the island accessible. Many anglers picked up and headed south. Ted B of PA though held his ground near the beach parking lot and it paid off for him big time. At 11:30 Ted brought in a 41 inch, 29 1/2 lb rock fish after a 10 minute battle putting him squarely in second place in the tournament behind Rick V's 39 1/2 pounder.

The Captain Steve's Annual Rock Fish Surf Fishing Tournament began today as the first day kicked off with a bang. Anglers were tossing their baits in around 6:00 AM to get a jump on the action. Shortly after the sun rose rods could be seen up and down the span of beach adjacent to the parking lots. There were probably 100 lines in the pool. The real action however didn't occur until about 10:30 AM when Rick V's pole bent in half. After a 15 minute fight with a fish that made several major runs for deep water, and with the help of the "Over the Dune Gang" Rick landed a 39 1/2 lb, 43" Rock Fish. Rick caught the fish on a 3 way bottom rig with a 7/0 hook and a chunk of bunker. Congratulations on a nice catch. Pat Devlin had a 26 inch rockfish that just missed the keeper mark. One lady had a short red drum caught in the wash. Shortly after her red drum Buck J. %E2%80%9CSandflea%E2%80%9D hooked up a 34 inch 13.5 pound rockfish which is currently taking second. Everyone is having a great time and enjoyed their day on the beach. Anglers did get a lot of sun today, the undertow was strong forcing many to go to sputnik sinkers and 5-8 ounce pyramids. We even had a few kingfish that how nice it was today. Dogfish kept others from being skunked better luck to everyone tomorrow.

For anglers who are anticipating using the ORV Zone beach area, park officials have stated that conditions will be evaluated again tomorrow at high tide to determine if the area can be opened.

Buck "SANDFLEA" J. a surf expert is currently in second

The surf actioned picked up some today as we saw a few nice stripers caught off the beach. Yesterdays beach wash over closed the ORV Zone to 4-wheel traffic today. With the zone closed, anglers were confined pretty much to the beach parking lot area, unless you felt like hiking your gear down the beach. Despite the closing, there were maybe a dozen anglers fishing the surf this afternoon getting ready for the big rock fish tournament that begins tomorrow. Unfortunately I didn't see a bent pole all afternoon, unlike this morning's rock action that left a couple anglers successful. Hope that the ORV Zone opens tomorrow. Jim Houser from Chincoteague caught a 36 inch 18.5 pound rockfish pictured here

Eli Omer from MD had a 39 inch rockfish caught on a 7/0 mod. ff and chunk of bunker.

Dave Street caught and released this 36 inch rockfish with the modified ff rig and bunker back

The anglers are starting to show up in numbers as many walked the beach today reaquaint themselves with the Assateasgue surf. We also now have a local celebrity as Electric Rick Volz made the front page of the Chincoteague Beacon pictured below...

Brad S. caught his first rockfish off the surf tonight a 24 incher he is determined to catch some more congrats

The fishing tournament will end at 5:00pm on Sunday afternoon with Penn Rods and Reels to be given away at that time for the heaviest 3 rockfish. Dont forget to sign in for the FREE tournament :%29 Jimmy
