ASSATEAGUE ISLAND BEACH - OFF ROAD VEHICLE USE
Assateague Island has both it's Virginia and Maryland ORV areas open year round for off road beach recreation. The Maryland portion of Assateague has an ORV zone 12 miles in length, with a 145 vehicle limit. Each end of the island limits the maximum number of vehicles which can be on the beach at any one time. The Virginia portion of the ORV area has several miles open year round, but does close it's extreme southern region known as "the hook" from March 15th-September 1st for the nesting Piping Plover which is an endangered species. The vehicle limit on the remaining 1.5 mile beach drops to 18 at that of year. If any endangered Piping Plovers decide to nest on that portion of the off road beach, there are by-pass routes that are set up to avoid the birds, but the area still remains open for the season. The 145 vehicle limit is reached early on weekends and often goes to a one-off/one-on system.
The off road permit is good for both the Virginia and Maryland ends of Assateague Island and there is a %2470 annual permit fee. There is no weekly or other short term permits. Off road vehicles must be "street legal"%28motorcycles and ATV's are not allowed%29. You will need to present your registration card. You need a low pressure tire gauge %28 it's recommenced to let the air out to 15 lbs. or so for the soft sand%29. There are air pumps near the off road entrance. A shovel, jack, a board to support the jack in the sand %2812" sq. minimum, 3/4" plywood or 1&1/2" hardwood%29, and a tow rope or chain %28substantial capacity, 10' minimum length%29 are also required. Fines are charged for each piece of missing required equipment. The permit is available through the mail %28request 3 weeks at least in advance%29. It can be obtained in person at the Visitor Centers also. In Virginia, fisherman must get an overnight fishing permit at the Visitor Center, since the enterance at the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge is closed from 10pm to 5am during the summer. You must be actively fishing for you and your vehicle to stay on the beach overnight.

Today on the surf was a little slow. It is open all the way to the point%28 it has changed the point has actually gotten wider with all the storms. There are a lot of shells so people were out picking a bunch up. Roger Triggs had 3 bluefish and only one skate. The surf was decent with 4 to 5 ounces was holding. Others also caught blues on cut bait mullet and spot.
Inshore only a few flounder were caught today once again most of them were small. Lester from Tom's Cove had 1 keeper while Jerry and Sandy had 3 that were 16 and a %C2%BC inches fishing the Assateague Channel by Tom's Cove.
Offshore fishing was also pretty slow the tuna were hard to find today. Aat the Washington Canyon a few bull dolphin were caught by the lobster pots. The is a lot of seaweed out there spread out.
Just a reminder that our surf tournament is November 10, 11, and 12th
Now all we can do is wait for the weather to cool a little and wait for the rockfish and drum to show up in numbers.
Happy 60th birthday Nancy Triggs.

Today was another so so day weather wise. We went to surf earlier today and did great with the skates. We also had 1 blues, the blues were hitting hard just hard to hook them. I also had a sandbar shark that weighed over 10 pound, at first I thought it was a drum until I saw its dorsal fin. Cut bait worked the best with mullet outdoing spot by a little. Inshore the bay is still a bit churned up and it is tough to get keeper flounder. Tonight we had a great suprise with this rockfish pictured below Joe Barranco did well catching plenty of rockfish most of them schoolies this one was the biggest at 29 inches. Thats it for tonight tight lines, Jimmy
Rick V. trekked out to the beach this afternoon to make the changing tide at 3 PM and try my luck. He was pleasantly surprised to find the parking lots on both the south and north sides of the beach circle were open. Also open was ORV access. There were about 10 vehicles out on the beach and another 10 anglers on the main beach. Looked like we were back in the swing of things. Unfortunately no one told the fish. After fishing for a couple hours and speaking to several anglers, I learned that skate and small blues were the action of the day and not too many of either were caught.
Park cleanup personnel deserve big kudos for getting the place ready virtually overnight.
Hey - if you don't see Park Ranger Justin around it's because he volunteered to fight wild fires in southern California. Good luck Justin and stay safe.
Also the surf today Brad S. from Baltimore, MD had 4 sandsharks and 5 skates. Roger Triggs seemed to be the skate king with 13 out there this morning. Chris H. tricked a pompano into biting on a silver spoon. The beach was not to rough but the undercurrent was strong. The O.R.V. Section is open now about half the parking lots on the beach are open. Brad also came in and bought a beach cart these cart hold over 200 pounds and will make any trip to the beach an enjoyable one. Who wants to walk back and forth a few times and drag all their gear with them.
Offshore today on the boat Hnd-site brought in 2 citation wahoo 42 pounds and 46 pounds
